History
Originally named Red Rock, after Dakota Chief Little Crow painted a rock, the town was renamed Woodbury in 1859 after Judge Levi Woodbury, a friend of the first chairman of the town board. Woodbury’s first settlers arrived in 1844, clearing the land of timber and creating farmland. Woodbury stayed primarily a farming community until the 1960s when urban sprawl found the quiet farm irresistible to build upon.
In 1855 the first school was set up, being run out of William Middleton’s house. In a period between 1852 and 1868 there were seven independent schools teaching the children of Woodbury. As the city and demand for education grew, Woodbury students would join the neighbor school districts until demand and growth allowed Woodbury to create it’s very own high school.
