History
The first village of contemporary Shakopee was established by Chief Shakopee of the Mdewakanton Dakota in 17th century.
By the end of 18th century the Ojibwa nation began pushing into Dakota territory and by the middle of 19th century the permanent Shakopee village was acting as a boundary to the Ojibwa.
In 1851 Thomas A. Holmes established a trading post at Shakopee and the city boomed as a commerce exchange site along the Minnesota river and the Ferry at Murphy’s Landing, bringing much activity to what had been an isolated city in the Minnesota River Valley.
The first steam train rolled from Mendota into Shakopee along Second Avenue on November 11, 1865, making Shakopee an important stop between St. Paul and New Prague.
By the 1960’s the Twin Cities metropolitan area had expanded and Shakopee evolved into a Twin Cities’ suburb. Even with this inclusion in Twin Cities life, Shakopee has always striven to maintain its unique identity as a historic river town.
